Taberu Rayu: The "Crunchy Chili Oil" That Makes White Rice Irresistible

Image
Today, I want to introduce you to Taberu Rayu. See that red topping on my rice? That’s it! It comes from the jar you see on the left. The name literally means "Chili oil for eating." It’s a savory, spicy oil packed with coarsely chopped garlic and onions that have been fried to a perfect crisp. The combination of that addictive "crunchy" texture and the salty-spicy kick matches perfectly with plain white rice. In Japan, rice is our staple food, and because of that, we have an incredible variety of toppings called Furikake or specialized condiments designed just to make rice taste better. When I have something like this, I end up eating way more rice than usual! It’s very affordable and incredibly delicious. If you love a bit of spice and texture, you should definitely give it a try!
