A 40-Year Favorite: The Biscuit Sand

Today’s photo features an ice cream treat you can find at Japanese convenience stores: Morinaga’s "Biscuit Sand."

​Believe it or not, this has been a long-selling favorite in Japan since 1980, evolving through minor updates over the decades.

​The combination of the soft, moist biscuits and the aromatic vanilla ice cream is just perfect! While the price has crept up recently due to inflation, it remains affordable and, most importantly, delicious.

​You can usually find it at Lawson or FamilyMart. Since 7-Eleven focuses heavily on its own private brand products, you might have a harder time spotting it there.

​It’s a classic for a reason—definitely give it a try if you see one!

​I went out for ramen with my friend today! We had this spicy, rich chicken ramen covered in bright red ichimi (cayenne pepper powder). ​The soup is so thick and creamy that it clings to the noodles perfectly. Forget Ramen for a moment—Try Japanese Curry Soba! 🥢

Everyone loves ramen, but for us Japanese, Soba and Udon are the true soul foods. ​While these noodle dishes might seem simpler than ramen, they actually offer an incredible variety of flavors—including some "junk food" style menus that can rival any heavy ramen! ​Today’s lunch is Curry Soba and a mini Oyakodon (Chicken and Egg bowl). ​Curry Udon and Soba are amazing! They combine a deep, savory Japanese dashi (soup stock) with thick, spicy curry. Inside the bowl, you'll often find sweet braised "Abura-age" (fried tofu), beef, and green onions floating in the rich soup. ​You slurp the noodles while they are heavily coated in that thick curry broth. The flavor is complex, spicy, and absolutely delicious. It’s a must-try! ​The Oyakodon that came with the set was also fantastic. Today's Budget-Friendly Lunch: Retort Curry and Bean Sprouts! 🍛

Today's lunch is Japanese curry rice and sautéed bean sprouts! ​In Japanese supermarkets, you'll find an incredible variety of "retort" (ready-to-eat) curry pouches. They are very affordable, yet each one tastes amazing. All you have to do is heat the pouch in the microwave for about a minute, pour it over rice, and it's done! ​For the rice, I used some leftover broccoli rice I made yesterday. ​The side dish is bean sprouts, which are probably the cheapest vegetable you can buy in Japan—only about 35 yen (approx. $0.23) per bag! My favorite way to eat them is a simple sauté with sesame oil, salt, and pepper. It’s so simple, yet delicious. ​Today’s meal is a real "budget home-cooked lunch," but I'm totally satisfied!
