The Hidden Art of Nishiki Market: A Morning Walk with Ito Jakuchu🐓

This is a photo I took early one morning while walking through Nishiki Market in Kyoto.

For me, it’s just a familiar path I often take, but the three-colored arcade ceiling looks stunning when it catches the morning sunlight.

Nowadays, Nishiki Market is filled with eateries for tourists and shops offering bite-sized snacks. However, it originally flourished as a traditional market where locals and professional chefs came to buy fresh vegetables and seafood.

Around 8:00 AM, most shops aren't open yet. But if you visit at this hour, I recommend taking a moment to appreciate the light from the arcade, the hanging tapestries, and the artwork painted on the shop shutters.

Since the birthplace of the famous Japanese painter Ito Jakuchu was a vegetable wholesaler right here in this market, many of his works are displayed throughout the arcade.

Even today, his art remains incredibly cool and timeless!
